Can I collect unemployment in New York State if I leave my job to take care of a family member ?

My Mother has a chronic health Condition- COPD ….does anyone here know if I can collect unemployment to leave my job to take care of my mom? Thanks!

    No, you can’t collect unemployment if you voluntarily leave your job.

    No, you can’t. Voluntarily leaving makes you ineligible for unemployment.

    The other reason is that you just claimed you are taking yourself out of the job market. Unemployment is only for people looking for work.

    I have a Family Member with COPD and have the person in Day Care.

    Call the department of labor and ask them. You can also check out their legal research tools on their website.

    If you end up needing to appeal a decision they make, the unemployment action center (http://www.uac-ny.org) can help. They can’t do anything for you until you have a hearing scheduled. Hopefully, that won’t be necessary.
