A cover letter is a short paragraph underlying why you think that you would be suitable for that specific job. And normally on a CV you would just describe your skills, so basically explain why the skills you have written on your CV apply to the job that you are applying for.

It’s describing who you are and how you would be helpful to them.

The first paragraph should be 2-3 sentences about how you heard about the position, why you would be a good fit, and requesting that they consider you.

The next paragraph should just mention your skills and how they would help you in the job. Briefly mention 1-2 prior jobs that are highly related to the position applied for (whereas the resume mentions all prior jobs, even if not completely relevant).

The last paragraph should just have your contact information.

Keep it grammatically correct and in business letter format. You can go to any university’s career office website and they will have sample cover letters to help their students (but they’re often open to anyone).

A cover letter is a short one page summary of your intentions of working with the company that you are applying at.
