could an employer deny employment to someone if they didnt list all their previous jobs in a job application?

I believe that some companies could be strict when doing a background check via someones social security which shows the company all the previous jobs a potential employee had in the past. Would it be considered lying on a job application if all former jobs weren’t listed in the application? Jobs that the applicant didn’t last for more than a week, to avoid giving a wrong impression?

    They can. But most won’t.

Usually, employers only care about work experience that applies to their job. Sometimes, however, employers want a full work history, especially if training costs a lot. This is to ensure that you can actually hold a job and that if they spend the money to train you that it won’t go to waste.

Typically the employer will let you know if they want a complete work history.

If they are going to go to the expense of a background check, I think they want you to be completely honest on your application. Most employers don’t bother with this kind of scrutiny. But you did not say what kind of job you are looking for, or what kind of company. If security is an issue, such as with a bank, I would be completely honest. I wouldn’t necessarily list jobs that only lasted for a week or two, but I would put some kind of note indicating that you did have a few jobs that just didn’t work out (as long as you were not fired from them!) – at least then they would not think you were trying to get one over on them and know that you are an honest person. Almost everyone has had these short term jobs when they are young – it’s just part of figuring out your life and nothing to be ashamed of. But if you don’t mention them, and you get caught, you will have almost no chance of getting hired with so many people out of work since it is an Employers dream market right now and they have LOTS of very qualified applicants for any job opening(s).

If it is a job that almost anyone would qualify for, I wouldn’t waste my time even thinking about any short term jobs you have had, let alone list them as they want to know your true experience and endurance in the job market – not your life story from A-Z.
