Help with cover letter for job at an animal shelter?

I don’t know what to say in my cover letter about relevant experience because besides being a lifelong pet owner and lover, I have none. I’ve only held two part-time jobs, and they were both in offices. What should I say about my qualifications? How can I write a strong cover letter without related (official) experience?

You have the answer in your question. Write that you have been a life-long pet owner and animal lover, which will count as experience dealing with animals. You can include the names and ages of your pets. For example, “My dog Beau is an 8-year old border collie and I’ve had him since he was a puppy. He loves to play frisbee with me.”

If you ever get stuck and want to have a really excellent cover letter, I can write one for you. Please see my site at http://karenbrunkeneedsajob.webs.com/apps/webstore/.

I think you being an animal owner and lover is a good start. Just talk about how you really care about animals and want to do what’s in their best interest.

Maybe include any special situations you have dealt with as a owner, such as caring for animals after surgery, giving medications, training…

Realize that you do have relevant experience and treat it as such. Just because your experience wasn’t paid and you happened to enjoy it doesn’t make it any less valuable. Also, realize how your office experience will relate to this position. I’m sure you picked up some transferable skills.
