  1. As a Reach certified Personal Brand Strategist, I have been waiting for the launch of Career Distinction by William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson with great anticipation and my already high expectations were delightfully exceeded. Having said that, I must admit I was surprised the actual book wasn’t heavier and more “bible esque” in size and weight but I definitely was not disappointed with the content.

In fact, maybe this review will be just that…a statement that Career Distinction is the “Bible of Personal Branding” and a must read for believers, skeptics and those in search of how to extract, express and exude their personal brand.

Aside from the content (again Bible says it all) the captivating and engaging use of quotes, facts, tables, case studies, tips, examples and antidotes peppered throughout make it a visually stimulating read. And just when you are on content “overload” you are led to the online Career Distinction Workbook for associated exercises. This is a welcome reprieve and a chance to incorporate what was read into an applicable exercise. This Bible is more than just a great read it is a practical guide to discovering and uncovering the Brand Called You. Amen!

  2. Arruda provides a useful reminder to “Google yourself” to monitor your online reputation. However, much of this book sets the context, and tactical recommendations are found only in the second half of the book.

Consider such alternatives as Radically Transparent: Monitoring and Managing Reputations online by Andy Beal and Judy Strauss, published in 2008 by Wiley/Sybex. Beal is a well-regarded blogger concerning online reputation management, and Robert Scoble, the omnipresent “Scobleizer” of the blogosphere, provides the forward to this book.

Some time ago I wrote a newsletter with the above title. One reader commented that it was a pity job seekers must now view themselves as inanimate packages for purposes of the job search. I mentioned the name of a certain car and asked him what it stood for. He said “safety.” I then asked him what he stood for; what’s different about him why an employer would choose him over his competitor. He hesitated, then said his Masters in Economics from a prominent university and 15+ years of experience in his field. He was the first person to whom I recommended Career Distinction.

William and Kirsten have chronicled the art of personal branding in an easy-to-understand format that job seekers at any level will find useful. It’s also an excellent resource for people involved in career development as the concept is fairly new to the career industry. This book has certainly found its place among my list of references.

  4. Roy A. Young says:

I have had the good forture of learning and applying the concepts and tools now documented in this book for the past five years. I can honestly report that I have achieved many of my professional goals: wrote a marketing book published by a major publisher (John Wiley) Marketing Champions: Practical Strategies for Improving Marketing’s Power, Influence, and Business Impact, earned an ownership position of a successful online publishing company, built an active network of dynamic and successful business professionals, and achieved a work/life balance, including quality and quantity of time spent with my wife and two teenage daughters.

If you dedicate yourself to applying what you learn from Career Distinction, you too will become fulfilled and successful in your work.
