How do I deduct job search expenses?

I was laid off from my union job last year. I spent money to go to other union halls to sign up and see if i could get a job. I spent money on gas, food and lodging which I kept track up. Are these all deductible and if so do they have to go on that form 2106 or can I just list them and take the full amounts for a deduction?

You would claim these on Schedule A. You would only be able to claim these if you are using Schedule A to itemize your deductions.

You’d have to use form 2106, so can only deduct if you itemize, and even then only the portion that’s over 2% of your AGI
